Doug Thompson
Guitar, ukulele, and jam band ensemble instructor Doug Thompson started playing the violin at age 7 and has been playing music ever since. He’s been a part of several bands, including Worfield Circle and, most recently, Too Lazy to Shave. Growing up in Bristol, Doug spent a great deal of time at the TTCC and Kelly Park. The creation of the after-school music program has given Doug the opportunity to share his musical knowledge and foster the arts in the community he loves so much.
The Guitar Class is perfect for beginner to early intermediate students, 10 years old and older. The aim of classes is to build chord vocabulary, learn simple melodies, and combine those with typical rhythm structures. Contemporary and classic rock, pop, country, alt, and indie songs will serve as the vehicle for building these skills. Students will have time to work as a group as well as receive individual instruction.
The Ukulele Class is an easy, inexpensive, and fast way to learn and play your favorite songs. The ukulele is a very accessible instrument, and students can learn songs in a relatively short time. The softer nylon strings make ukuleles more comfortable than steel-string guitars, perfect for younger players, and the strumming techniques translate directly to the guitar for those who may wish to graduate to an electric or acoustic guitar.
For musicians with some experience who are looking for a low-stakes outlet to quench their desire to play in a band, the Jam Lab Ensemble is a great opportunity. TTCC has all the equipment necessary to outfit a contemporary band, and we’re looking for enthusiastic, energetic, and positive people to come together and collaborate. The goal is to develop and perform level-appropriate songs from diverse genres to broaden participants’ knowledge of music theory, technique, and song structure.
